Hood was the driving force behind the establishment of UCLA's famous Institute of Ethnomusicology, which was founded in 1960 and laid the groundwork for the new field to thrive over the long term at UCLA.Īs Hood explains in the oral history “UCLA’s Institute of Ethnomusicology, 1961-1974” (Hood, 1972, 23-24), And in 1954 composer and Javanese music specialist Mantle Hood joined the faculty after completing his Ph.D. Musicologist and Latin American specialist Robert Stevenson was hired in 1949. In 1947, the Department of Music first offered its graduate “Seminar in Comparative Musicology” (renamed “Seminar in Ethno-musicology” in 1955). The earliest traces of UCLA Ethnomusicology began in the UCLA Department of Music in 1943, when Laurence Petran taught the first world music course, “Folk Music.” Composer Boris Kremenliev, who specialized in music of the Balkans, arrived in 1947 and was the first to teach ethnomusicology courses in European and Central Asian music cultures. Its graduates are among the most distinguished in the discipline, with many having founded ethnomusicology programs around the world.
Today, the faculty consists of 11 ladder-rank professors and almost 30 adjunct professors and lecturers.įrom 1958 through June 2019, UCLA Ethnomusicology has awarded 497 graduate degrees (264 M.A., 234 Ph.D.) and from 1993 to June 2019, 498 undergraduate degrees. In addition to lecture courses and seminars, the department offers 17 performance ensemble courses in a variety of musical traditions from Asia, the Middle East, West Africa, Europe, and the Americas. An interdisciplinary field, it draws on not only the various fields of music-focused scholarship but also on areas such as anthropology, sociology, history, media studies, and cognition. UCLA Ethnomusicology combines an interest in music as an art form with questions about how musical art and practice relate to other aspects of culture, society, politics, and economics. It is one of three departments in the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. The Department of Ethnomusicology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) is the largest program in ethnomusicology and the only free-standing Department of Ethnomusicology in the United States.
